The Order of the Great Fifth Sea
Rawley Point Chapter House
Meeting Minutes: Autumn Session
Date: 8 November 2025
Recorder: Klara Nilsen, Field Scribe
I. Convening of the Chapter
The Chapter convened at dusk within the Bathymetric Hall of the Rawley Point Chapter House.
Presiding: Keeper Alistair Corvus
Quorum established.
Attending: M. Fielding, G. Whitcomb, E. Voss, J. Rademacher, S. Iqbal, and several adjunct members in seasonal residence.
A soft seiche pressed at the limestone arches, the lake audible through the vents.
II. Shoreline and Seasonal Conditions
Fielding delivered the littoral report:
Water levels continue gradual decline toward winter low.
Sandbar migration noted south of the Boathouse, no structural erosion observed.
Forest path layered in pine needle fall “to the depth of silence.”
Surface water recorded at 11°C, classed as cold immersion.
Action: November and December transects to be entered as a continuous seasonal sequence in the Aligned Ledger.
III. Commemoration — S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, 50 Years
The Chapter briefly acknowledged the fiftieth anniversary of the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Corvus called for a moment of silence, noting that remembrance requires neither spectacle nor speech.
No further observance planned.
IV. Silent Circle Expedition — After Action Review
Corvus declared the 2025 field season concluded. Discussion centered on final dive sequences and the accompanying storm.
Reports:
Nilsen: all sonar, imagery, and samples secured in the Lower Vaults.
Whitcomb: Silent Circle Atlas nearing completion; revision to be finalized midwinter.
Voss: confirmed meteorological basis for the storm, though “the timing remains narratively inconvenient.”
Findings:
Public posture to remain empirical and unsensational.
Future expeditions to observe narrower weather windows and redundant retreat routes.
Dive logs and recordings to remain sealed until internal review completes.
Actions:
Whitcomb: finalize Silent Circle Atlas, Rev. I.
Nilsen: compile After Action summary.
Corvus: draft closing seasonal note for Dispatches.
V. Preparations for Winter
Discussion turned to the triad of House, Land, and Shore, guiding winter operations.
House (Knowledge):
Winter seminar series in planning; opening session: Seiche Dynamics and Historical Storm Tracks.
Study rooms under quiet rotation logged in the Aligned Ledger.
Land (Motion):
Shoreline and path maintenance to continue until heavy snow.
Check-in procedures reaffirmed for all travel during lake effect conditions.
Shore (Water):
Ice observation permitted; immersion suspended.
Boathouse entry restricted to maintenance personnel.
Maintenance Status:
Little Concord secured in cradle; systems drained.
Carriage House vehicles winterized; mechanical stores accounted for.
Supply inventories confirmed.
Action:
All members responsible for communal areas or equipment must file completed winterization reports with the House Steward by 15 November, covering all vessels, tools, and research apparatus.
VI. Other Business
Interchapter Correspondence: northern partners report barometric anomalies during recent seiche events; data requested for comparison.
Public Enquiries: modest rise following recent Dispatches; replies to remain courteous and unrevealing.
Terminology Reminder: continue substitution of “fluctuation” or “seiche” for “tide.”
Membership Inquiry — Whitcomb:
Whitcomb introduced the possibility of sponsoring a prospective member “currently exploring reassignment” from the Great Lakes Research Consortium.
Corvus questioned whether this initiative was romantic diplomacy or recruitment.
Whitcomb answered, “Potentially both, in that order.”
Fielding requested assurance that the candidate’s interest extended beyond sentiment; Whitcomb replied only that “the heart, too, performs fieldwork.”
Discussion concluded without resolution. Matter tabled pending review and, per Corvus’s instruction, verification of sincerity and swimming competence.
VII. Closing Observations
Corvus concluded:
“To endure is to adapt without spectacle. We serve the Lakes best by keeping the lamps lit, the instruments dry, and the silence respected.”
Meeting adjourned at 21:14 Local Time.
