Minutes of the Spring Concordant Meeting

Minutes of the Spring Concordant Meeting

The Order of the Great Fifth Sea
Rawley Point Chapter House

Presiding: Alistar Corvus, First Warden of the Concordance
Recorded By: Klara Weiss, Keeper of Proceedings

1. Call to Order

1.1 The meeting was called to order in the Lecture Hall of the Rawley Point Chapter House by First Warden Corvus.
1.2 Weather conditions were noted as unusually calm along the littoral for the season.

2. Attendance

2.1 Members present included:

  • Alistar Corvus — First Warden of the Concordance

  • Klara Weiss — Keeper of Proceedings

  • Gerald “Charts” Whitcomb — Senior Keeper of Hydrographic Records

  • Nora Pettigrew — Field Scholar of Littoral Systems

  • Emile Pierce — Instrumentation Steward

  • George E. Bjork — Administrative Fellow

2.2 Additional members were present intermittently during the morning session.

3. Report of the First Warden

3.1 First Warden Corvus reported that winter shoreline observations have been entered into the Chapter House record and compared with previous seasonal measurements.

3.2 Several measurements along the Rawley Point shelf remain under review due to minor inconsistencies between field sketches and subsequent soundings.

3.3 The present calm of the lake was noted but not interpreted as evidence of stability. Members were advised to defer conclusions regarding shoreline movement until spring seiche activity becomes clearer.

3.4 The previously tabled powered parachute aerial survey proposal was reviewed.

3.5 Preliminary analysis indicates the platform may provide limited benefit for low-altitude visual shoreline reconnaissance, particularly in observing dune contours, surface coloration, and littoral transition zones.

3.6 Operational limitations were also noted, including wind sensitivity, payload constraints, and challenges in mounting survey instruments.

3.7 The platform remains under consideration only as a supplementary visual observation method and not as a primary survey tool.

4. Report of the Keeper of Proceedings

4.1 Klara Weiss confirmed that the Aligned Ledger for the upcoming field season has been opened.

4.2 Members were reminded that all field observations must ultimately be transferred into the Ledger regardless of their original recording format.

4.3 Several recent observations were submitted on café receipts and loose note paper and have been accepted for transcription.

Marginal note (unofficial): Three numbers and the word “approx.” written on a napkin is not an archival format.

5. Report of the Senior Keeper of Hydrographic Records

5.1 Gerald “Charts” Whitcomb reported continued reconciliation of historical bathymetric measurements with data collected during the previous autumn’s Silent Circle shoreline pass.

5.2 Several historical soundings appear to align closely with recent readings, though certain anomalies remain unresolved.

5.3 Additional archival materials have recently been reexamined and may assist in resolving discrepancies in the hydrographic record.

6. Report of the Field Scholar of Littoral Systems

6.1 Nora Pettigrew presented an assessment of shoreline conditions following the late winter thaw.

6.2 Ice retreat occurred earlier than expected, leaving sections of dune grass exposed to wind shear along portions of the northern littoral.

6.3 An early-season observational walk between Rawley Point and Two Creeks was recommended to document shoreline transition before increased seasonal activity alters surface conditions.

7. Report of the Instrumentation Steward

7.1 Emile Pierce reported that winter-stored instruments have been recalibrated and returned to operational condition.

7.2 The handheld depth sounder has been restored following minor mechanical interference encountered during storage.

7.3 The Little Concord research launch, currently housed in the Boathouse, will undergo routine inspection prior to the first shoreline survey of the season.

7.4 Emile noted that the powered parachute concept would face practical limitations for carrying precision instrumentation.

8. Report of the Administrative Fellow

8.1 George E. Bjork reported the identification of three external grant opportunities related to freshwater monitoring and littoral observation.

8.2 Eligibility requirements and application deadlines have been compiled for internal review.

8.3 George noted that while the Order traditionally conducts its work without external funding, such opportunities could support equipment maintenance or archival preservation.

Marginal note (Klara Weiss): George prepared a presentation. The Chapter House continues to lack a projector.

9. Matters for Continued Consideration

9.1 Early-season shoreline observation walk (Rawley Point to Two Creeks).
9.2 Continued reconciliation of historical hydrographic measurements.
9.3 Further evaluation of aerial shoreline observation using powered parachute platforms.

10. Adjournment

10.1 With no further matters raised, the First Warden declared the meeting adjourned.

10.2 Informal discussion continued in the Lecture Hall following adjournment.
